Optimizing images for best website performance

Image Optimization: The Secret to a Fast, SEO-Friendly Website

Once your website is launched, we provide basic instructions so you can manage your own content. While many clients enjoy this independence, the most common mistake made is uploading images that haven’t been optimized.

If you’ve ever visited a site where images “crawl” down the screen or take forever to load, you’ve seen the impact of poor optimization. High-resolution files slow down your site, frustrate visitors, and can actually hurt your search engine rankings—especially on mobile.

How to Prepare Images for Your Website

To keep your site running at peak performance, you must balance visual quality with file size. Here is how to handle the two main factors:

1. Resolution & File Weight

Standard professional photos are often 300 dpi (dots per inch), which is perfect for print but way too heavy for the web.

  • The Web Standard: Adjust your images to 72 dpi.
  • In Photoshop: Go to Image > Image Size and set the resolution to 72. This significantly reduces the “weight” of the file without losing quality on a screen.

2. Dimensions & Scaling

Don’t upload a massive photo if it’s only going to be shown in a small box.

  • Full-Screen Backgrounds: Aim for a maximum width of 2500 pixels.
  • Standard Page Images: Most tablet-width images only need to be around 800 pixels wide.
  • Exporting: In Photoshop, use File > Export > Save for Web. We recommend a quality setting of 70–80% to keep files crisp yet lightweight.

Don’t Have Photoshop? Use a Plugin

If you don’t have access to professional editing software, you can still automate this process directly within WordPress. We recommend a plugin called Smush.

  • How it works: Once installed, Smush automatically compresses and optimizes every image as you upload it to your Media Gallery. It’s a “set it and forget it” solution that keeps your site fast and your SEO strong.
