Generating an automatic thumbnail image

Although it seems like it should be automatic to all of us, most times when you post the URL of your website to social media, there is not an instantly generated picture that shows up. This is something that we are currently building into website automatically now, but on older sites, it is actually an add-on to every project because it does take additional configuration, beyond the website itself. We are happy to give clients a properly sized image of their website to manually announce on social media if they would like, which may be all that’s needed for most people.

To get the thumbnail image to show up instantly, there are security settings to go through and each social media account (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) has to be set up separately. Each account has a special developers section to enable the website to communicate with social media and it takes some debugging and back and forth to get just right. It also sometimes takes a special plugin in the site to communicate between the social media accounts to have this image generate automatically for you. The process usually takes about an hour ($100.00) for the 3 main accounts, and less if it’s just one that needs to be configured.

For those clients who are avid bloggers, it’s more important and a convenience to have a thumbnail show up when sharing new blog posts. For those that don’t want to manually post an image to their social media, it’s good to familiarize yourself with the “Featured Image” box at the bottom right of the blog editing screen. An image that’s placed here will automatically post when shared on most social media platforms, as well as inserting the photo into your blog post itself. As always, remember to optimize images so that they’re a nice size and file weight and don’t slow down visitors to your blog.

Current design trends that are making brands and websites more engaging

Noticing and keeping up with design trends is one of the biggest parts of my job and also one of my favorite parts. Similarly to why I loved art history so much in college, design is an expression of what is going on in society, although on more of a popular and every day level than with fine art. Keeping things current and modern, yet still letting your individual personality shine through is an important way to connect with your audience and stay up to date and relatable. Your website is a valuable chance to get undivided attention from your visitors, even if it’s just for a minute. The goal for websites is engagement, keeping people interested and clicking and staying on your site until they send that contact email. read more…

Upcoming improvements to the website builder

It’s been interesting to see the evolution of websites in this business and how it’s increasingly easier for clients to take control of maintaining their own sites if they’d like to. Of course, building WordPress websites from scratch isn’t as easy as the advertisements want us to believe they are. So it does take care of the huge learning curve to have a professional design and build one for you and then have you take it from there. There are many different page building software programs to choose from, and for the past 5+ years, we’ve been using one called Divi. Like many others, it uses a system of grid layouts, drag and drop modules, and highly customizable features. This allows us to build websites that are unique to each client rather than simply popping things into a pre-made template. read more…
